On Saturday, September 27, 2008, Toronto's best (and, yes, only...) 100% pure Star Trek convention is happening again... with more tribbles than ever before.

Full Schedule has been posted. Be assured, it's going to be crazy and fun, just like last year. Check out the media section for some pictures and video from TrekZac FestiCon 1.

The FestiCon is a fundraiser for the non-profit Tranzac Club. 100% of the net proceeds are donated to the club.

Parrises Squares

The fast-paced game of parrises squares, never before witnessed by a 21st century audience, is played on a 6x6 grid. Teams of three players move in tandem, attempting to score on their opponents while defending their own goal. Sign up in advance as a team of three or individually by emailing khannooniensingh [at] gmail dot com. You may also sign up at the FestiCon on a first-come basis.

Bat'leth Tournament

Demonstrate your prowess with the traditional Klingon blade in the freestyle Bat'leth Kata competition. No preparation is necessary (or allowed). Allow your inner warrior to wield the blade with honour and prove your worth. Bat'leth provided. Sign up in advance by emailing khannooniensingh [at] gmail dot com. You may also sign up at the FestiCon on a first-come basis.

3D Chess

Our 3D chess variant is quick to learn and fun to play for anyone with an understanding of the traditional rules of chess. Sign up in advance by emailing khannooniensingh [at] gmail dot com. You may also sign up at the FestiCon on a first-come basis.

Trek Trivia Starring Lou Israel

Legendary Star Trek trivia host, comedian and entertainer Lou Israel brings his signature game to the TrekZac FestiCon. It's super fun, whether you're an expert or not. Sign up in advance by emailing khannooniensingh [at] gmail dot com. You may also sign up at the FestiCon on a first-come basis.

Glogger Test

This is the glogger feed. Images can be emailed or uploaded through the website. I haven't tried the mobile phone method or tried uploading any videos, because I think the live feed only supports images.

Here's an example I found using a Flicker slideshow. This also lets you email a photo to be instantly added to the slideshow.

About the FestiCon:

The TrekZac FestiCon is a one-room mini Star Trek convention (though very, very different), with as much participation as possible drawn from Toronto's independent arts community. The event is also a fundraiser for the Tranzac Club (all net proceeds are donated to the club... tickets won't cost much, $5 - 10 max. we're still budgeting.).

The Steam Whistle Blast Off Beer Blast is our kick-off party. Apparently there's laws against offering and advertising free beer. We're not going to break any laws. However, those who come earliest will be rewarded to the full extent legally possible. We CAN advertise free spacemosas (they're space samosas... okay, they're regular samosas, but they're delicious!), live music, and parrises squares sign-ups. Come early!

The afternoon portion of the event starting at 3 pm includes panels, several games, guest speakers, and crafts. This year will include a special demonstration of Klingon ceremonies and rituals by the Klingon Assault Group. In the evening, the event becomes a showcase of local actors, musicians and comedians, all performing Star Trek-related material. Romulan Ale is free flowing and plentiful. Tribbles abound. Participation in the day time games and discussions is easy and very encouraged.

This year's showcase line-up is looking incredible, much like last year's, which included a diverse cross-section of local groups and acts, such as acclaimed Toronto comedy troupe The Sketchersons, the Klingon Assault Group, musical acts such as Henri Faberge and the Adorables, Woodhands, The Vulcan Dub Squad, Ontario Power Generation, The Rural Alberta Advantage, Basement Arms, Laura Barrett, Gravity Wave, Garbage! Violence! Enthusiasm!, The Incidentals and many more.

About the Tranzac:

The Tranzac is a non-profit member supported community organization with a focus on promoting arts, music and theatre. The TRANZAC (an abbreviation of Toronto Australia New Zealand Club) also works to promote and support Australian and New Zealand culture in Toronto.

The Tranzac is open to the public and is home to music and community theatre most nights of the week in our intimate Southern Cross Lounge and our larger Main Hall both with bar service. The Main Hall features a curtained stage and a professional sound system.

* Panel Discussion - "Am I a Borg?" moderated by Misha Glouberman

Most "evil technology becoming intelligent and taking over" sci fi
scenarios are about robots or computers turning evil and attacking
their masters (2001, The Matrix, Terminator, Battlestar Galactica,
etc.). The Borg are different in that the technology and the master
have fused; they've merged through a method that seems more akin to
evolution than attack. But how did they get there? Are we on the path
to becoming the Borg?

* Panel Discussion - "Is Commander Chakotay Osama Bin Laden?" moderated by Guinan

How much are the Maquis like Al Qaeda? Do terrorists receive
consistent treatment by the Federation? And does the future respond to
terrorism any better than we do today?
